Patrick Dwyer — Become a Better Leader Today
As the leader, there lies a responsibility with the position that should not be taken lightly. Leaders represent more than just themselves and the actions they take reflect back on the company and everyone affiliated. This article is meant to provide people in positions of power a guide to leading others successfully and respectfully.
Leading a group of people with different backgrounds and personalities can be difficult so it is crucial that leaders listen ! Listening requires patience, attentiveness, and absolutely no interruptions. People have concerns and questions so its important to be present in the conversation and make yourself readily available.
Being available is not the same thing as having all the answers. There are many instances where leaders assume they know everything there is to know about a subject and believe they can answer every question. It is okay to say I don’t know the answer to that question. By doing so, everyone who views that question as a concern will come together collectively to get the answer. Problem solving as a team creates a great working environment for everyone!
Another issue with certain leaders is their mindset on the actual position. Some leaders may take a position of power to assert dominance over their subordinates. Others use their position to become popular and obtain praise from others. That is a mistake and leaders will be out of a position quickly if those paths are taken. Being a leader is not a popularity contest and while it is good to be liked by many, leaders who seek respect will succeed far more often. Keep in mind that respect is only earned by treating everyone on the team equally. Disrespecting those who look to leadership for guidance can create a negative working environment that promotes division amongst the team.
Being a leader means setting an example for others to follow and succeed. In order to do that, people in positions of power should reflect on ways they can be better as a leader using activities such as exercising, eating healthy, and meditation. Being in the best mental and physical shape gives leaders an avenue to release stress from a job and not bring any stress related issues into the office.
